The tree gets most of the attention, but holiday lights can do a lot more than that. A few strands in the right places make the whole house feel warm and festive, especially on long, dark December evenings.
These ideas are easy, mostly renter-friendly, and work whether you go all out or keep it simple.
Start with one or two ideas, then add more as you go.
1. Frame Your Windows
Lights around a window look great from inside and out. Use small adhesive clips along the frame so you don’t need nails, and choose warm white if you want a classic look.

Battery-powered window candles are another easy option, especially for windows without a nearby outlet.
2. Dress Up the Mantel or a Shelf
Weave a strand of fairy lights through garland on the mantel, or along a bookshelf if you don’t have a fireplace. Thin copper or silver wire lights disappear into the greenery, so you only see the glow.

Tuck a few battery candles or a small lantern between the greenery to add a little extra glow.
3. Put a Glow Behind the TV
This one is easy to overlook. A strip of lights behind the TV or along the back of the entertainment center throws a soft glow onto the wall, so the room feels festive even when the movie’s on.
Color-changing LED strip lights are handy here, since you can set them to red and green for the season and switch back to warm white in January. Most stick on in a few minutes and run from an app or voice assistant.
The same strip works under kitchen cabinets or along a headboard after the holidays, so it doesn’t go back in a box.
4. Light Up the Staircase
Wrap garland and lights around the banister, or tuck a strand under the lip of each step for a soft path of light. Use clips or ties, not tape, so you don’t peel off paint in January.

Battery strands work best here, so you don’t have cords running down the steps.
5. Fill Jars, Bowls and Lanterns
Battery fairy lights inside mason jars, glass bowls or lanterns make instant centerpieces. Add pinecones, ornaments or a little faux snow, and set them on the dining table, a side table or the entryway.

Look for strands with a timer so they turn on at dusk without you thinking about it.
6. Add Warmth to the Kitchen
The kitchen gets a lot of use during the holidays. A short strand along the top of the cabinets or tucked into a garland over the window makes cooking and baking feel more festive.
7. Layer the Tree Lights
For a fuller look, wrap lights from the trunk outward along each branch instead of just circling the outside. A mix of warm white and a few colored or twinkling strands adds depth.

A good rule of thumb is about 100 lights for every foot of tree if you like it bright.
8. Make the Bedroom Feel Cozy
Drape fairy lights along the headboard or a curtain rod for a soft glow at bedtime. Keep them warm white and dim so the room still feels restful.

A few quick checks keep the season safe:
Holiday lighting safety checklist
☐ Check strands for frayed wires or broken bulbs
☐ Use indoor-rated lights inside, outdoor-rated outside
☐ Don’t chain more strands together than the box says
☐ Keep lights away from curtains near heaters
☐ Use timers or turn lights off before bed
Store your lights wrapped around a piece of cardboard when the season ends, and next year’s setup will take half the time.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a huge budget to make your home feel festive. A few strands in the right places, plus a little glow behind the TV or along the stairs, go a long way.
